Hardy Belch And The Bully Reviews
4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable, fun tales that will make you laugh out loud and take note of their clear message of the story., November 29, 2012 By Lucinda
Hardy Belch is your average twelve year old boy, who has many exciting adventures and intriguing tales that are full of drama and thrills & spills. Volume 1: Hardy Belch and the bully focus' on the significant issue of bullying which many children of all ages, and even during secondary school age from twelve up to sixteen, can easily relate to and thus connect with the story. The simplicity and yet vivid and clear moral of the story is emphasized so well to you, which defines the right course of action to take when faced with a person who is bullying you. There is always a solution to physical violence and in this story the author makes it so plain and obvious on how thinking carefully, logically and by ones selfless actions you may overcome the issue. Also, the values of friendship between both people and animals are accentuated through the various characters, such as Tiny and Hardy for an example of teamwork and honesty in their relationship. Complete with humor and wit (i.e. the Mastiff x Great Dane is named Tiny and the dog's thoughts in regards to dominating the world if he had thumbs I found most amusing). Another inspired and clever twist is that Tiny, Hardy Belch's dog is telepathic and to add a bit more flavor to the writing, the dog is able to communicate with his human and so the fun begins!
This delightful story was a fun and enjoyable read that promotes reading for pleasure by highlighting the satisfaction one gets, hence I would highly recommend it to all children up to the age of around 12-13 (although as an adult I still loved it too!). William G Bentrim is an accomplished writer whose charming tale has impressed me greatly, consequently for this reason I look forward to reading more of his work as well as many other tales about Hardy Belch and his dog Tiny. This easy to read story that is complete with imaginative illustrations that bring the tale to life, is a joy to behold and a story that I would readily choose to read to my nephews at bedtime.

I don't know if the solution offered to end bullying in Hardy Belch and the Bully is right or whether it would work, but being as this is a fictional story, I assume it does. It is well-written and you will like it.
4.0 out of 5 stars Fun, Quirky, and Unexpected, October 24, 2 012 By Jeffery Edwards (San Diego, CA United States)
A kid with the unlikely name of Hardy Belch, a school bully who just might be a hero (with a little nudge from his #1 victim), and a 240 pound telepathic dog. What's not to like? William Bentrim has penned a solidly enjoyable children's tale, with illustrations that manage to be fun without crossing the line into cutesy. Kids will love it when Hardy and his strategically-gifted pooch, Tiny, hatch a plan that's simply too crazy to fail.
4.0 out of 5 stars Fun Reading - Even for Adults!, October 16, 2012 By John R. Monteith "Author of Rogue Defender, l... (Farmington Hills, MI United States)
Okay, I'm an adult filtering this before I let my stepson read it, but I admit I got hooked into wanting to know the ending. Come on! It's a catchy concept - a bullied kid named Hardy Belch with a telepathic 240-pound dog named Tiny. That opens up so many possible conflicts and resolutions, and I can see why the author picked this duo to spearhead a series. But back to this story...
Hardy resolves the bullying conflict with a creative and positive approach that relies upon the special powers of Tiny, the dog. So it's obviously not a real-world solution, nor does it offer practical guidance on how to deal with bullying. But it's a story of hope that motivates creative optimism in dealing with sticky interpersonal relations problems.
Quoting the main character - "We need a better solution than more violence". This book promotes that theme through a story that's surprisingly readable for both children and adults.
5.0 out of 5 stars Heart, humor, and a great message, October 16, 2012
By Seventh Star Press (Lexington Kentucky) William Bentrim had me won over quickly in this one with the inclusion of a telepathic dog named Tiny (who is anything but Tiny). He uses humor and had me chuckling from the outset with some of the fun he has with names in the book, though it should be said right away that this book is intended to deal with the very serious issue of bullying.
This book presents a healthy approach, in terms of looking for a non-violent solution that not only brings the bullying to an end, but also puts the bully onto a better path. As in another children's book by Bentrim I just read (Mommy's Black Eye, which deals with the topic of domestic violence), William has an eye for redemptive angles that I appreciate in light of the fact that we are all too often a "lock them up and throw away the key" mentality.
The main character Hardy and his dog are poised to connect very well with a younger reader, and the ability of the two to "talk" to each other is something every kid would like to do with their pet. This book has heart, humor, and a great message. Highly recommended.
