This book’s goal is to provide children an understanding of what a police officer does and some of the stresses that police face. It is also meant to humanize police and show that they are fathers, mothers, sons and daughters. The media tends to emphasize (for ratings) negativity. On a daily basis the fact that the vast majority of police officers are protecting and serving tends to get lost in media negativity. This book is not an apology for any action by any police force anywhere. It is a firm compliment for that vast number of police out there on a daily basis, doing their best, to protect and serve the public.
Illustrated by Samantha Gustafson
Samantha has family members who have been or are police officers. Samantha's cover letter stated she would put her heart into this project. It shows in her work. Thank you Samantha.

My Mom The Police Officer is written by William G. Bentrim and illustrated by Samantha Gustafson. On the computer at school, Tommy sees some startling news in his newsfeed. The report he read said there were people fighting with police officers and trying to hurt them. His fears were allayed when his mother returned home safely. Tommy’s fear for his mother’s safety overflows into the questions he asked her about her job. He wanted to know why people didn't like cops, why the news would put a biased slant on the truth, and why people would want there to be fewer police officers in n the force. What is a police officer’s job? How many police officers uphold the oath they take? What do you do when there’s an emergency? When a cop stops someone, is it always because they want to give the driver a ticket, or are there other reasons?
My Mom The Police Officer by William G. Bentrim is a brilliant way to let kids know the essential functions of law enforcement. Tommy is right to be concerned over his mother with so many officers getting hurt in the city nearby. Luckily, she is far out of harm’s way and is more than ready to explain her job to her son. I love the way Bentrim shows the true nature of such a dangerous job and highlights the fact that the majority of police officers take the job simply because they want to help people. The lovely illustrations by Samantha Gustafson complement the story as they illustrate the story with beautiful images. I recommend this story to anyone with children, especially those that want to reinforce how important law enforcement is in today’s society.
