This book has been written for the blind and low-vision children of Africa, and their families and friends. It will be introduced at St. Joseph’s Kiomiti School for the Blind in Gesusu, Kenya where young children and their families are being brought together to learn and share ideas about independence and safety and to meet the educational aspirations of the children.Children who live close to the school will live in their homes while others will have the opportunity to reside at two recently-built dormitories. This book is the first in a series of 4 books which chronicle different situations that blind and low vision children face. Our wish is that these books will bring acceptance, independence, happiness and empowerment to blind and low vision children throughout Africa and the rest of the world!!

The mother in this story has two visually impaired children and finds ways to allow them to do their chores. In helping Mother, they also gain independence. This mother empowers her children! A cane is used by a blind or visually impaired child for protection and for independence. If a cane is not available, a long stick can be used as a substitute. The stick can be carved from a branch and should measure in length from a child's shoulder to the ground. The cane or stick is used to find an object before a child contacts it so the child does not fall. If a child attends a school for the blind, the stick may then be replaced with a cane. The children in this story are a very important part of their family. It is because of their hard work that the mother accomplishes all of her tasks!

This is the third book in a series of children’s books that examine different types of vision conditions prevalent among Kenyans. Church Bells Ringing chronicles a day in the life of a family whose baby is born blind. The baby enjoys a trip to church with his family where he is attentive to the sounds and smells surrounding him. The baby receives his most important sensory information from those close to him-- their smell as they come close to him, their voice as they speak and sing to him, their touch when they hold him against their body. Sometimes a baby who is blind will suddenly become very quiet which may mean he is interested in what he hears. He could also get cranky which could mean there is too much noise for him to process. A parent learns to interpret a baby’s cues. Reaching out for toys or people allows a baby to make contact with others. We hope you enjoy reading about little Robert and his family. There are many games the family plays, which teach Robert about the world that surrounds him.

This is the final book in a series that casts a light on blind children in Kenya and their families. These books showcase common themes of independence, happiness, and empowerment. The family and friends of the blind child also demonstrate acceptance; understanding that blindness may require tasks to be adapted and completed in a slightly different manner. Heaven Sent Rain explores the concept of teamwork and working together toward the common needs of the family. The two brothers each have different strengths that they contribute to complete the daily family chores. John is not only strong, and independent, but blind. He is a main contributing member of the family team! These brothers depend upon the rain for the animals and the vegetable garden, so they can attend school come September.
