Depression doesn’t just impact adults; children often suffer from depression as well. A major difference between childhood and adult depression is that adult depression is taken seriously and childhood depression is often overlooked. Some statistics suggest that 50% of children afflicted with psoriasis are diagnosed depressed. Much of that depression may be attributed to social isolation and negative peer reaction to the disease. It is important to recognize that kids get depressed for many reasons some medical and some social. When a child shows prolonged sad or upset moods then medical consultation may be necessary. This book is certainly not diagnostic, it is simply trying to explain to kids that depression is not “weird” and that diagnosed depression is treatable. Tommy is down and has felt sad and upset for weeks. His Mom tells him that his Dad has battled depression for decades. He and his mom decided that he may be facing depression and should see a professional.

A Parent’s Struggle:
Helping Children Understand Alcoholism

This book has a personal connection. The son of a close friend died from alcoholism. Chris was outgoing and had a huge personality. If you met Chris, you couldn’t help but love him. He was that kind of guy. Chris left behind two children who loved their dad. This book will try and help other children who are impacted by this dreadful disease.

Alcohol addiction is an insidious disease. It is a disease that fractures families and harms everyone in the family. It is important for the family and especially the children to know that it is a disease. The family cannot cure the alcoholic. The family’s love and support can help an alcoholic recognize they need help. There is no cure for alcoholism but understanding it is a disease may help children cope with the family disruptions the disease causes.

I love to read. My dad taught me a love of reading by reading to me and then taking me to the public library when I could read. Dad was an eclectic reader and introduced me to a wide variety of genres. My comic book collection was the envy of my peers. My life has been successful, and I credit a great deal of that success to reading or the love of reading. I’ve had diverse careers all of which demanded literacy. I believe literacy is the foundation of educational success. I hope this book will inspire reading. Loosely quoting my main protagonist, “if I can inspire one child to read my work here is successful.” Eric couldn’t read and ended up in jail. Illiteracy led to anger and anger led to incarceration. Eric’s journey to literacy may help young reluctant readers discover a love of reading.

Good, bad, or indifferent, I frequently find myself motivated to write a story. 2020 has been a trying year with a pandemic and with racial unrest. A pandemic tends to focus your thoughts and recognize your mortality.

Seeing someone murdered by a cop makes you realize that we, the human race, need to take a long hard look at who we are. I know too many good cops to generalize that all cops are bad any more than all Blacks are bad. This book’s goal is to help kids understand what is going on in 2020. The book is not a panacea, I do not claim to have answers or solutions. I am so troubled about our current world that I HAD to do something. This book has repurposed illustrations from My Dad the Policeman and Does Johnny Have Autism due to a feeling of urgency to get this out and in front of kids. Thank you to Samantha Gustafson and Danijela Popovic for their artistic talents.

The only race we should see is the human race.

“Daddy Goes On A Trip” addresses pre-school children and their concerns about parents who travel or are militarily deployed. Children today are often exposed to things that their parents never had to face. Military deployment was practically unknown for a generation. Two-income families have become the norm. Kids are often confused and even frightened as to why Daddy or Mommy has to travel.

Taking the time to clearly explain can make a world of difference for the child’s emotional and mental stability.

Addressing fear and helping children realize they are not the only ones experiencing the disruption of travel and deployment is the goal of the book.

Once again a book was motivated by things I saw around me. A 3-year-old climbing into the suitcase her traveling father was packing and telling him she was ready to go, literally brought tears to my eyes. She just couldn’t understand why Daddy wasn’t home all of the time. You have to be made of stone if you don’t well up watching military parents being welcomed home from deployment by their children. Many of those kids have difficulty understanding where or why their parents are gone. I don’t expect this book to be any kind of panacea; I only hope that it provides some of these children with some understanding of the world around them.

Daddy is Gone is a reaction to the death of a close friend of mine years ago. It is merely that, a reaction, it does not in any way describe the impact of his death. It does however include feelings that accompanied that experience. Having had classes on death and dying when earning my Masters's degree really didn't prepare me for someone close dying. The demise of the aged is sad but expected. The blindside experience of the death of a peer is just that a blindside experience. Imagine how much worse that is for the emotionally volatile young who have no life experience to prepare them for the ultimate insult, the death of a loved one. This book is certainly not a panacea for grief, it merely tries to explain to a child that life will continue, much differently, but it will continue and it is so important to persevere.

The book was inspired by a young lady who loved rocks. It was simply inspiration and in most ways not descriptive of any actual experiences. She does have many geodes and love of rocks though. Destiny’s love of rocks was inspired by a second-grade teacher. That teacher’s impassioned love of geology engendered a similar passion in her student. Destiny’s passion for rocks was clearly demonstrated when instead of taking cupcakes or Rice Krispie treats to her class on her birthday, she gave each child in her class a geode. In this story Destiny’s passion for rocks is carried to amusing extremes. With the compliance of her teacher, Destiny scores the penultimate rock for her collection.

There are tons of action-adventure elementary school-age books out there. I don't see enough of them emphasizing girls as the hero. We need to make sure that 50% of our population grows up knowing they have an internal hero.

If we can encourage girls' imagination to see themselves as victors we are insuring both their own and our own future as they raise strong children of both genders.

Destiny showed her love of rocks in Destiny The Girl Who Loved Rocks and in Destiny The Girl Who Loved Dragons, Igneous (her favorite rock) the dragon is introduced as her sidekick and cohort for a future adventure. My goal is to meld fantasy and science fiction with humanistic adventures suitable for children in elementary school.

DOES JOHNNY HAVE AUTISM?

Much has been made about the dramatic increase in autism. Something to note is that autism as a term has been replaced by the expression autistic spectrum. Various disorders have been placed on a spectrum of behavior which has differing levels of impact.

All too often children have been labeled and then the self-fulfilling prophecy aspect occurs when realistic perceptions are clouded by a misplaced label. This book’s goal is to decry the label of autism and to provide a simplistic description of the autistic spectrum suitable for elementary age children.

Funerals are part of life. As adults we have a basic understanding of what occurs when there is a funeral.

Children do not have that luxury. This book tries to explain what a funeral is and what happens at a funeral.

It is non-denominational and does not deal with the grief that normally accompanies a funeral. This book just tries to explain the basic aspects of a funeral from the perspective of a ten-year-old boy who just lost his father.

Dementia is a frightening thing to adults so it is hardly surprising that it’s frightening to children. Dementia is a general term for a decline in mental ability severe enough to interfere with daily life. Memory loss is an example.

Alzheimer's is the most common type of dementia. It may be on a sliding scale of total confusion to just occasional memory lapses. All dementia is not Alzheimer's disease and many people show moderate memory loss without ever being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. This book is not an attempt to define the disease or to suggest a cure or treatment.

The goal of this book is to provide a simplistic explanation of general dementia to a primary-age child. Kids are amazingly resilient if they are provided with explanations for confusing things in their lives. My hope is this book will provide children a modicum of illumination on a confusing issue.

Growing old is better than the alternative. Overall, we have an aging population which means that children frequently have great grandparents as well as grandparents. Kids are curious and this book attempts to explain some of the factors of aging. Most importantly it points out to children that it is important to accept the elderly with their frailties. Understanding those factors that are part of aging enables kids to better relate to their elders.

Facts and Photos on The Doan Brothers

The Doan brothers were actual human beings living in Bucks County, PA during the American Revolution.

The brothers were lapsed Quakers which meant they were not limited to the Quaker philosophy of non-violence.

October 22,1781 the Doans robbed the Newtown Treasury of 1,307 Pounds, the largest robbery of Public funds ever perpetrated in Bucks County, PA. The Doans were reputed to have hideouts in several places in Buckingham Township. There are caves on Buckingham Mountain that are reputed to been have used by the Doans. The Durham Cave also known as Devil’s Hole is located about 200 feet east of the Durham furnace and a little north of the Durham creek, quite near where the creek empties into the Delaware River. It consists primarily of a large room about 160 feet long, 55 feet wide, and 30 feet high in the center. This is near Riegelsville. Other caves in Holicong and Solebury were used as hideouts, the Tohickon Creek Cave.

The brothers were eventually captured or killed. Moses Doan was killed when a posse led by Col William Hart found them hiding out at a farm on Fleecydale Road. Col.Hart had been drinking with friends at the Gardenville Tavern, which still exists today. When he was informed of the Doan’s location he formed a posse and led the raid on the farm. Col. Hart supposedly wrestled Moses Doan to the ground and Doan surrendered. Captain Robert Gibson then treacherously fired a musket ball into the heart of Moses Doan, killing him.

The rest of the gang escaped in the confusion although all but Mahlon were later captured and executed. Mahlon supposedly escaped leg chains by cutting off the fleshy part of his heels and successfully fled to England.

Abraham and Levi Doan are supposedly both buried outside of the Friends cemetery on Point Pleasant Pike in Plumstead Township. I have only the photos I took of the graveyard.  The Quakers would not allow the "gangsters' to be buried within their graveyard.

The Doans were seen by some as heroes and others as thugs. The term Loyalist was applied to the Doans. It may or may not have been accurate. The winners write the history and history now shows the Doans as simple gangsters. A more detailed version of the life and times of the Doan Brothers can be found here.

We love to take pictures and show them to the world.

Like it or not the Internet is here to stay and every parent needs to understand that the Internet may be a dangerous place for their children.

Conversely the Internet can be a wondrous cornucopia of information and delight. My personal belief is that the Internet has enhanced communication and increased the closeness of people. Look at Skype and Zoom allowing families to communicate face to face across the miles. Kids who are playing the massive multiplayer games (MMO) may appear to be sitting alone in front of the computer but with headsets and microphones are communicating real time with their peers. All of that is good but keep in mind that all may not be as it appears on the Internet.

This story is a cautionary tale of concern and illustrates why it is important for parents to know what their children are doing on the Net and with whom they are doing it. I believe the Net is a good thing but parental oversight is crucial for the safe use of the Internet.

The Adventures of Hardy Belch chronicle the exciting and unbelievable adventures of a normal 12-year-old boy and his 240-pound telepathic dog.

In this book, Hardy copes with a bully, learns about intolerance, and discovers the value of community cooperation. Parent resources on bullying and intolerance are included. Combining mystery and humor each story is written to entertain and highlight the value of friendship, planning, and selfless actions. Hardy Belch will hopefully appeal to the young reader. Hardy doesn’t have superpowers, although his dog may. He is an ordinary boy dealing with a life that includes stress. Stress over grades, bullies, the unknown, and the family’s financial well-being, are all too prevalent today.

Hardy and Tiny discover the Internet can be a perilous place. They encourage healthy skepticism when interacting with others on the Internet. Hardy will deal with all the issues he faces in a positive way, hopefully showing kids that life, in general, is an adventure. If children can laugh as they read and learn to love to read, their life will be enhanced.

As a former teacher, guidance counselor, and current parent and grandparent, I am distinctly cognizant that as far as kids go, there are no experts.

Expertise is based on experience and learning. We may learn from the same books but each and every one of us has different experiences with our own families.

Kids whine, good kids, and kids that aren't so good, all whine. Many times, their intent isn't to whine, and sometimes that is exactly what they intend.

Whining isn't indicative of a "bad" kid. It is normal. Normal doesn't make it any easier to listen to, day in and day out. If this book, aimed at preschoolers, can even slow down some of the whinings, it will be a monumental contribution to parental mental health.

Hopefully, it will make your child smile and perhaps you too can smile seeing the normalcy of their behavior. If nothing else, this book may help you to appreciate how good your own child really is.

Diabetes is not just a word to 12-year-old Jack. It has changed the way he lives his life. Jack has learned not to just cope with a disease but he has learned he can live his life the way he wants while successfully treating his diabetes.

This book was inspired by a young man I met who was just becoming acclimated to his insulin pump and diabetes. I gathered from our conversation that he was shocked to discover kids could have diabetes.

In addition, it appeared that his peers were equally uninformed about diabetes and the variety of treatments available.

This book’s goal is to help elementary-age children better understand diabetes and its treatment.

“ Psoriasis is a common skin condition that speeds up the life cycle of skin cells. It causes cells to build up rapidly on the surface of the skin. The extra skin cells form scales and red patches that are itchy and sometimes painful.
Psoriasis is a chronic disease that often comes and goes.” Mayo Clinic

Some studies have suggested that psoriasis can contribute significantly to depression in children, suggesting children with psoriasis are twice as likely to be diagnosed with depression than the norm.

If you combine those feelings with comments made by peers, psoriasis can cause your child to suffer depression and feelings of isolation.”
Healthline.com

Kids can be cruel, sometimes intentionally but most often unintentionally. This book provides a simplistic explanation of psoriasis. When children understand that psoriasis is not contagious and have even a rudimentary understanding of the disease they are far less likely to tease children with psoriasis. Greater acceptance by their peers can hopefully alleviate the onset of depression.

I won’t board a dog and I won’t crate them like air freight. I guess part of the motivation of this story is there are days I miss my dogs. I get my doggy fix by embracing Paul or Cheny, both are goldens who live in our small community.

Paul stops and provides affection and doggie groans to any who miss their dog.   Cheney lays on my feet until he gets a belly rub.

Divorce is hard on kids!

Kids are resilient and if provided explanations they can normally weather the storms of divorce.

This book is to help kids realize that their lives can continue in a positive way, changed, but still positive.

You may be hard pressed to find a family today that does not have, at least, one member that has had marriage dissolution. The ubiquitous nature of divorce does not lessen its impact on those who experience it. A friend asked me if I had a book on divorce and I had to say no, at that time. Now this book explores one type of marriage dissolution and one more book will be out to explore a more amiable breakup.

Kids are resilient and if provided explanations can normally weather most storms.

Remember the goal here is to help kids realize that their lives can continue in a positive way, changed, but still positive.

Domestic violence exists.

That is a simple disturbing fact. It isn't something that should be ignored or swept under the rug. It is imperative to face this problem, acknowledge it's existence and do our best to aid those who are exposed to it.

Children, all too often, are susceptible to accepting responsibility for their parent's bad behavior. They need to understand that they are not responsible for the violence.

This book attempts to explain a very complicated issue to young children. It is focused on pre-school to middle elementary school children.

It is not designed as a panacea, merely an attempt to help them understand what is going on in their lives.

( A decade after being written, this book tops my sales' figures month after month. The Pandemic didn't help.  Please help those who are often helpless.)

It is also meant to humanize police and show that they are fathers, mothers, sons and daughters.

The media tends to emphasize (for ratings) negativity.

On a daily basis the fact that the vast majority of police officers are protecting and serving tends to get lost in media negativity.

This book is not an apology for any action by any police force anywhere. It is a firm compliment for that vast number of police out there on a daily basis, doing their best, to protect and serve the public.

Elisabeth is the shortest girl in 5th grade and often the target of bullies. She proves to herself and to her peers that how tall you are doesn’t define who you are.

There are many kids out there who dread going to school due to bullying. Bullying is not always a pummeling of a child, it is often verbal which may result in longer term damage than a physical beating.

Elisabeth is based on a real live, young lady who expressed to me her frustration with her peers and their preoccupation with her stature.

In so many aspects this child is superior. She is loving, friendly, beautiful, bright and immensely sociable. For her self image to be negatively impacted by her stature is thoroughly dismaying.

I wrote this story for her and both she and her Mom told me that it made her feel better about herself. That feedback encouraged me to publish this story in an effort to help other kids feel better about themselves.

Physical size can not measure the ferocity and compassion of the heart, spirit and soul. Truly in the measure of a person, short or tall doesn’t matter at all.

My thanks to "Elizabeth" for her inspiration and her friendship.

Most of my books deal with social issues. I have been asked if I couldn't write something that is more light-hearted.

We have all known children that become “experts” on things they like and we have been amazed at how much they can learn when they are internally motivated.

The boy who loved sharks is an example of how one little boy succeeds in his dreams by using what he has learned and demonstrating his compassionate nature.

Having fun is the hallmark of the teenage years. Pulling pranks is generally fun. Pranking has been elevated to an art form at Bright Lives Academy, a private school. The uptight, upright founders of Bright Lives Academy were subjected to their first prank at the 1898 graduation ceremony.

This book captures the hijinks and frivolity of several generations of pranksters at Bright Lives Academy. The pranksters change from generation to generation, but having fun pulling pranks is their ultimate goal. These madcap pranksters take pride that while having fun their zany antics never cause physical harm, and never damage school property.

The family of today may not be the same as the family of yesterday.

Regardless of structure, if love and nurturing are present, if children are valued and protected it is a family.

This book hopes to show that differing family structures need not be confusing.

This book looks at the feelings that siblings of injured or sick children face daily.

Often parents overlook the impact on all their children of overt focusing on a child that may be injured or ill.

Older children can normally deal with this through logical thought, younger children frequently react emotionally.

Hopefully this book will help the younger child understand and deal with their feelings.
